Patuxay: Patuxay, literally translated as Victory Gate, sits in a square in the center of Vientiane's main boulevard Lan Xang (million elephants). The monument resembles the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, speaking to Laos' colonial past, but contains many elements of Lao architecture. It was originally started while the country was under colonial rule under the name Anousavary Monument, but later finished by the Royal Lao government and had its name changed to Patuxay. Funds given to the government by the Americans meant for the construction of a new airport were used to complete the construction. Because of this, it is sometimes referred to as the vertical runway.
Patuxay Park: Along with the monument, Patuxay Park houses two fountains and is a very popular place for exercisers in the early mornings and evenings. The fountains are typically only turned on in the evening hours and during special events.
