Buddha Park: Also known as Xieng Khuan (Spirit City), the Buddha Park lies just outside Vientiane on the bank of the Mekong river. The park contains over 200 brick and concrete statues representing figures from Buddhism, Hinduism and Lao folklore.

One structure in the shape of a giant pumpkin sits near the entrance to the park. You can enter the structure and climb up through the three levels, representing hell, earth and heaven, and emerge through the top to get a bird's eye view of the park. Each of the three levels have many statues pertaining to the level on which they are located. I have included a picture of the heaven level above.

There is also an enormous statue of a reclining Buddha that adorns a large portion of the park.

Even though the statues may look old the park was actually constructed in 1958 by Bunleua Sulilat, a layman who professed a blend of Buddhism and Hinduism. After the 1975 communist revolution he returned to his hometown of Nong Khai, Thailand, directly across the Mekong, and built a second statue park, Sala Keo Kou.
