Rice Paddies at Ban Phonhthat

That Phonh: Built over the period 557 to 700, That Phonh sits near the edge of a small lake. Along with the stupa, a main hall, a shrine hall, monk's quarters, statuary, and a prayer pavilion are also present within the temple. A second pavilion is used for the preparation of trays used as offerings during prayer at the temple. Vat That Phonh is a very active place, with many coming from all over the area to worship here.

The rice paddies surrounding the village containing the temple are some of the most picturesque in all of Savannakhet Province.

Boun Pha That Phonh: On the full moon of the third lunar month, typically occurring in February, a festival is held at That Phonh, lasting for three days. It is held to celebrate the time when the temple was used as a shrine for offerings made to Shiva and other Hindu gods. Four hundred balls of khao ji (grilled sticky rice) are presented in the belief it will bring good health and good fortune.
