Duathlon: On Saturday, the duathlon started in the morning. The elite athletes started at 7:30, the sprint distance started at 8:30, and the standard distance didn't get going until 9:30. They were staggered to spread out the field and keep the competition safer. The field was rather small and we started off with a 10k run. Again, I had a good run and was still feeling good going into the bike. It took several miles on the bike for my legs to adjust, never having run a duathlon or tried a bike-to-run transition in training, but eventually I got in my rhythm. The course was four loops of 10k. I was passed by a few people, including one couple drafting in the non-draft legal race late on the course. They were actually drafting a non-competitor! (He was probably an elite athlete heading back to his hotel.) I was able to overtake one on the bike, but then made it my mission to overtake the other on the run. He was a ways ahead of me, but I was able to keep him in my sights. I didn't gain much ground on him for the first half of the race, but he slowed the second half and I was able to pass him with about 1/2 mile left in the 5k run. Peep kept count and said I came in tenth overall.

After the race, I got a massage (my legs were quite sore already) before heading back to the hotel for lunch, a nap, dinner, and then to sleep. The hotel offered free use of bicycles, so Peep went out on a small ride before dinner while I relaxed in the hotel. She also used the bike to go between the race start and the hotel. There was a farewell party at the hotel for some group or other, but it wasn't loud enough to keep me up and ended early enough that it didn't wake me up in the middle of the night.
